Comraich Holiday Cottage: introduction | |||

| Just the perfect atmosphere to paint those pictures, begin the book you always meant to write, shoot the best photographs, or just sit ............. You can enjoy this magnificent view too. You are in the North West of Scotland; situated up the dramatic coastline above Lochinver in West Sutherland. The birds of Sutherland are everywhere – arctic terns, fulmar, puffins, oystercatchers, divers, gannets, eider duck, and shore birds in abundance. Also birds of prey, but the Golden Eagle is a rare sighting. Walks through the rough countryside and peatlands, and along the rocky shore are almost without limit. Mountain walking or scrambles are some of the best in Scotland with so many beautiful mountains to explore. Washed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, Assynt has a better claim than most parts of the British Isles to a unique collection of plants and animals. Explore the sheltered rocky parts of the coast, or the beautiful sandy bays. White sandy bays of crystal turquoise sea are to be found at Clashnessie, Clachtoll, and Achmelvich (field of the sand dunes). See the spectacular view of Eddrachillis Bay. Photography? There is so much to capture in the changing moods of the dramatic landscape. How about the occasional deer passing below the cottage or along the skyline? Or the highland cattle grazing by the loch? Grey seals in the surf? Maybe a sea otter? Or a passing school of dolphins, or porpoises? Even Minke whale in the summer. Comraich is full of the family's books, maps, paintings, etc. including details of favourite walks enjoyed by all our visitors. There are also folders with lists of birds, flora and fauna seen over the years, and the visitors books make for interesting reading! Comraich is used for some of the year by the family who built it in 1968, but there are many dates when it is available for visitors on a one or two weekly basis. |
