Comraich is situated five miles north of Lochinver (loch of the estuary), on the Drumbeg-Stoer road which winds along the spectacular coastline, in a little hamlet known as Clachtoll (stone with a hole) . This is the area known as Assynt . If you are new to Scotland, you will see on the map of Scotland that Sutherland is situated in the far northwest, approximately 96 miles from Inverness , or 280 miles from Glasgow , or 269 miles from Edinburgh (all three cities have airports and car hire.
The nearest railway station is at Lairg (46 miles). There is a mail bus between
Ullapool and Lochiner. Inverness to Lochinver is approximately 96 miles.
Lochinver
is 5 miles from Clachtoll and provides two self-service stores, Post
Office, newsagent,
butcher, bank, restaurants, hotel, B&Bs, petrol filling station,
doctors' surgery,
and several other shops. Lochinver has a fishing harbour and small boat
marina.
The Inver River has a beautiful waterside walk, and excellent fishing.
Sandy beaches are in nearby Clachtoll, and a brief car ride will bring you to the sandy beaches of Clashnessie and Achmelvich. Further away up the coast are the spectacular sandy beaches of Sandwood Bay and Oldshoremore.
The north-west Highlands were awarded
Geopark
status in 2004, in recognition of the area's outstanding geology and landscape. The metamorphic Lewisian gneiss rocks are three thousand million years old, among the oldest in the world, and once formed part of a mountain chain as high as the Himalayas. There is a very good Tourist Information Centre in Lochinver with displays, postcards, books and brochures on local attractions. Brown trout fishing is by permit only on all lochs.
