Comraich is situated five miles north of Lochinver (loch of the estuary), on the Drumbeg-Stoer road which winds along the spectacular coastline, in a little hamlet known as Clachtoll (stone with a hole). This is the area known as Assynt.

If you are new to Scotland, you will see on the map of Scotland that Sutherland is situated in the far northwest, approximately 96 miles from Inverness, or 280 miles from Glasgow, or 269 miles from Edinburgh (all three cities have airports and car hire.

Assynt is home to some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe. The coastal road to Lochinver is a spectacular drive which weaves its way through traditional crofting communities. Inland there are hundreds of hill lochs which offer brown trout fishing, and magnificent mountain peaks.

The house stands alone above the Maiden Loch with unsurpassable views across the sea to the Ross-shire mountains, and also the nearer peaks of Suilven, Canisp, Quinag (milking pail), Stac Pollaidh (steep hill of the peat bog), Glas Bheinn (grey mountain), Cul Mor, Cul Beag, Ben More, Conival.  These mountains have long been celebrated by artists, poets, photographers, and countless hillwalkers.

The nearest railway station is at Lairg (46 miles). There is a mail bus between Ullapool and Lochiner. Inverness to Lochinver is approximately 96 miles. Lochinver is 5 miles from Clachtoll and provides two self-service stores, Post Office, newsagent, butcher, bank, restaurants, hotel, B&Bs, petrol filling station, doctors' surgery, and several other shops. Lochinver has a fishing harbour and small boat marina. The Inver River has a beautiful waterside walk, and excellent fishing.
Other villages in the area include Stoer (sea stack), Drumbeg (little ridge), Scourie, Achiltibuie, and the small town of Ullapool (with many facilities, including a golf course and supermarket) to the south of Lochinver.

There is a very good Tourist Information Centre in Lochinver with displays, postcards, books and brochures on local attractions. Brown trout fishing is by permit only on all lochs. Sea fishing can be arranged in Lochinver. See information booklets and Visitors Book in Comraich also.
